Multi-Platform Modern Apps Solution for Healthcare Monitoring Company

Overview

Our client, a maker of health monitoring equipment used in hospitals and clinics, requested our assistance with a project to modernize the software used to display and interact with data generated by its medical devices.

Previously, our client’s software ran on workstations local to the devices themselves. Because of this, software updates had to be conducted on each device itself, requiring permission from—and close coordination with—hospital IT departments.

Our client recognized that moving its software to a web-based platform would drastically improve the update process and allow data to be sent to multiple types of devices for a flexible, modern user experience.

Solution
Our focus for this project was to build out an in-depth proof of concept for both the back end and the user interface of the new, web-based application. Over the course of approximately four months, we gathered requirements and designed and developed the solution. Then, we handed off the proof-of-concept solution to our client’s internal development team, which finished building out the application over approximately two additional months. By following this pattern, our client had in hand a complete, multi-platform solution in only six months.

The solution itself had to accommodate signals from the monitoring equipment gathered multiple times each second, keep that data secure, and deliver it to screens used by doctors and nurses. The screens display data summary, plots, alerts, alarms and more.

We designed the application to use only open-source platforms to ensure total flexibility across not only the workstations associated with the medical devices, but also other Windows and Android devices running standard internet browsers. Given data security considerations at hospitals, our client deploys the software from web servers located on-premises. A next step will be a web-based, external-network rollout, enabling a health system to run the application from one server location that handles devices across multiple hospitals, clinics, and other facilities.

Another next step will be to expand the proof of concept into other types of patient monitoring as our client expands its product base.

This complex project benefited from Concurrency’s experience across technical architecture, business process improvements, and user experience design, among others. Our project team included a solution architect, engineer, UX expert, business analyst, and project manager. We were honored to be part of our client’s mission-critical digital transformation, enabling it to more efficiently and flexibly serve patients and their caregivers.
