Global Manufacturer Adopts Azure Virtual Desktop to Modernize IT Infrastructure, Reduce Onboarding Time and Reduce IT Costs

Success Story:

A global manufacturer sought to improve end user collaboration and productivity while also decommissioning its on-premises Citrix solution, which was outdated and costly to maintain. Approximately one-third of its workforce was contractors, and there was a need to get contractors up and working without spending a large amount of the budget on infrastructure.

SITUATION

A global manufacturer sought to improve end user collaboration and productivity while also decommissioning its on-premises Citrix solution, which was outdated and costly to maintain. Approximately one-third of its workforce was contractors, and there was a need to get contractors up and working without spending a large amount of the budget on infrastructure.

Before this project, contractors would have to have a physical laptop or desktop in order to do work. On top of this, the organization’s thousands of employees needed to access a plethora of on-premises applications frequently, making operations, licensing, and maintenance challenging to maneuver. Concurrency was engaged to decommission Citrix and assist the company in moving from Citrix to Azure Virtual Desktop.

SOLUTION & RESULTS

Concurrency was going to be working on two projects hand-in-hand, replacement of devices for contractors while also decommissioning Citrix to make room for AVD. With the cloud migration to Azure already underway, it made sense to also incorporate AVD, which could lead to future opportunities for the manufacturer to expand the virtual desktops to other departments in the company.

With AVD, the manufacturer was able to streamline employee and contractor onboarding costs while saving significant time and money. AVD also supports the organization’s efforts to maintain a secure and efficient IT infrastructure.

MORE ABOUT AZURE VIRTUAL DESKTOP

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), formerly known as Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD), is Microsoft’s modern desktop solution housed in the cloud. It is a desktop and app virtualization service that delivers optimal and scalable desktops and applications through Windows 10, Windows Server, and Windows 7.

Why would an organization want to move to AVD?
  • Cost Savings: lower overhead costs with patching, maintaining, deploying physical desktops and reducing managed service provider.
  • Efficiency: companies can deploy desktops in minutes versus days.
  • Security: no longer leave data on physical devices.
  • Capacity: Microsoft manages capacity while clients deploy apps at scale as needed.
